Lactuca sativa originally came from the eastern Mediterranean and has been used in human food for over 2,500 years. Lettuce is essentially eaten in salads (100 gr contain around 15 calories). It has a wide variety of leaves, colours, shapes and textures and is rich in vitamins A. It has a high content of an antioxidant called carotenoid that combats cell ageing.

Lettuce can be grouped into three main groups: flat leaf, curly leaf and thick, crunchy leaf.

Lettuce leaves can be used to make anti-insomnia infusions. The flat or thick crispy leaves can be crushed and made into a paste for home beauty masks with excellent results in relieving itching and eczema.
